A Way Back Wednesday, Thankful Thursday and Friday Finds All in One!

It's been another one of those weeks. I just haven't gotten the gumption up to posting.  I'll blame it on being almost done with being pregnant (yay!!).

But today, I have a treat.  A three in one.  Well, it's a treat to me.  How often can a blogger combine a story from your past, a thankful thought and a bunch of great links?  Not very often, but with today being 9-11, I think I've found a way.  So here it goes.

-------------------------------------

Way Back Wednesday
On September 11, 2001, I was sitting in Mr. Rush's AP Environmental Science class.  It was my senior year in high school.  I remember Mr. Rush being a bit late so we all happily chatted until he got there.  Once he did arrive in class, I could tell something was really bothering him.  He had a very serious look on his face and he was usually a pretty easy going kind of guy.

After we all quieted down, he somberly announced what had happened in NYC and that there was a huge fire in D.C. (which turned out to be a rumor).  At that point, only one plane had hit.  Like every other American that morning, we were shocked and scared.  We were all so upset that we decided not to do any studying that day.  How could we concentrate when we felt like our world was coming to an end?  We had no idea what was really going on out there.

Most of the rest of our classes that day were like that.  The library had the news playing on their TVs.  I remember one of my friends told us about seeing the coverage of both towers falling while she was in the library.  She was shocked and really, really upset.  She said something like, "I can't believe I just watched 1000s of people die!"  It was a really horrible day at school.

-------------------------------------

Thankful Thursday

With 9-11 happening this week, I've been reminded of how grateful I am to be American, and to live in America.  I'm grateful that even when horrible things happen, our country can pick itself back up and keep moving.  Being an American, it's hard to imagine what life's like for other people in countries with less freedom.  Freedom is so natural for us.  I appreciate that.

Friday Finds

Here are a few 9-11 related links I found this week.  Each of them has a slightly different take.  Enjoy!

Nine Eleven, The Pioneer Woman.  Sort of a then and now post.  I love her writing!

9-11 Quilt that Traveled the World, The School of Good Enough.  I have known this blogger for years.  She's an excellent quilter.  And she doesn't just make regular quilts.  She is a quilt artist!

Patriot Day, Cake Wrecks.  This post is a little more on the humorous side--as you would expect with Cake Wrecks--which might sound like a bad thing on such a serious day.  But I enjoyed it.

Remembering 9/11, A Thrifty Mom.  A traditional 9-11 memory.

Friday Finds: A Link Round-up

Dog--It's What's For Dinner, Ask a Korean.  I've always wondered about Korea and eating dog.  I knew it wasn't all that common.  People don't buy it from the grocery store, and I only remember one restaurant that served dog soup.  But other than that we didn't learn much about it.   This post is pretty enlightening!

Powdered Eggs, Everyday Food Storage.  I've been wanting to find out more about powdered eggs!  This post even includes a video tutorial!

Friday Finds: A Link Round-up

ColorInc Gallery Wrap Contest, Texas Chicks Blogs and Pics. Awesome giveaway!  When I was in 7th grade, my parents ordered a family picture on a canvas-like something.  It looked so cool, but they still needed a frame.  With a gallery wrap, the picture is printed on canvas and then wrapped around a wooden frame.  Picture frame needed!  I want this so bad!!!

PS: I've got a couple fun baby polls on the sidebar. Check 'em out! :)

Friday Finds: A Link Round-up

Henhouse, Awkward Family Photos.  Probably the most bizarre prom photo I've ever seen!

A Double Dose of Joo Seong-Ha on Euna Lee and Laura Ling, Ask a Korean.  I love Ask a Korean.  He's great.  This post is an excerpt from a North Korean blog.  I tend to agree with what both these bloggers say.  It's also interesting to read what a typical college lecture in North Korea would be like!

Oh, Go Fly A Kite, Cute Overload.  Sorry for linking to yet another picture... well, not really.  This one is also pretty funny!

Jessica from Color Me UnTypical posted this on her FB page this week.  It's pretty amazing that one girl can do so many accents!

Friday Finds: A Link Round-up

The Official Simon's Cat Website.  If any of you own or have owned a cat, you'll appreciate the humor.  And if you've never had the joy of owning your very own kitten, you'll see what you're missing!

Freezing Food A to Z, A Thrifty Mom.  This is an AWESOME list! It's good to know the right ways to freeze foods so that when you use them later they won't be disappointing!

Beyond the BabySteps: Legumes, Let's Talk about Beans, Food Storage Made Easy.  I have always wondered about how to prepare beans and how to use them everyday!  It looks like you could put them in anything and nobody would notice!

Oh, and here's the latest shot of my baby... :)

Evidently she has some fuzzy hair and HUGE cheeks!

Friday Finds: A Link Round-up

I haven't been as good at posting as I would have liked to be this week.  AND I didn't collect any interesting finds throughout the week either!  All I have are two from this morning.

Contest on CoffeeShope Free PS/PSE Actions!  This woman is amazing!  She makes so many cool actions for free!  This week she's doing a contest.  She'll do a random drawing and pick one or two lucky people for a custom ready-for-the-web action.  It will resize, sharpen, and add your custom watermark to your pictures!  Awesome!  I hope I win!

Akizo Designs, Digital Scrapbooking from Japan.  This girl has some good freebies every now and then.  Most of the website is in Japanese, but she does have the important stuff like, "download here," in English.  Even though I don't read Japanese very well, I was happy that this foreign blog was in Japanese.  At least that way somebody in our house can read it.  There are quite a few French digi-scrapping sites out there!

Friday Finds: A Link Round-up

God Bless the Internet, Cute Overload. This is one of those cute "are you my mother?" sort of stories. This time it's a male pigeon/dove with two baby rabbits. Cute!!!

dafont.com. The thing I like best about the internet is that you can find all kinds of things in a minimal amount of time through linkage! Jessica Sprague is the best. I've linked up to a bunch of great sites through her photo editing class. Today it was a free font site dafont. FREE! I love free!

Yes, You Can Paint Laminate Furniture, Blissfully Domestic. I've wondered this myself! I'll have to make a note of this.

Friday Finds: A Link Round-up

Powdered Milk Food Storage Recipes, Everyday Food Storage.  I love chocolate.  I love chocolate milk, ice cream, shakes, etc.  Enough said!

Google Chrome: Taking Aim at Microsoft -- and the iPhone, Time.com.  Interesting!  I had no idea you could make a free operating system.

Where Rich Countries are Buying Farmland, The Christian Science Monitor.  And some people think we're imperialistic!

The Amazing Backwards Adventure.  This is a fun video a friend of mine from High School made with some friends.  Everything is backwards!!!  Found it on his brother's family's blog.

funny pictures of cats with captions

So this picture proves that my maturity level is what, 8 years old at the most?

Friday Finds - A Link Round-up

Thursday's Silliness, Blissfully Domestic.  As much as I hate the purposefully bad English on these pictures, they really make me laugh.  Check them all out!

Follow That Map, 5 Minutes for Books.  I love maps.  This book looks so great that I'm tempted to buy it for my kid... who isn't born yet...

Scrapgirls.com.  These girls are great!  I found a perfect template set for making a digital scrapbooking baby book this week.  It's exactly what I wanted!

Friday Finds: A Link Round-up

Tile Board Crafts, Scribbit.  I needed this tutorial when I tried to make some of these a couple of years ago.  Mine ended up having a TON of bubbles and I didn't get all the resin out of the "grout lines."  But my husband was very gracious and didn't complain when I gave them to him!

This is hilarious!  There is no way I could ever move that fast!!!

June 19, 1986, Modern Molly Mormon. Reading stories like this makes the drunk driving problem much more personal.  I'm MADD!!!

Friday Finds: A Link Round-up

Old Churches of Korea's Catholic Heartland, The Marmot's Hole. Most people don't know that Korea has the second largest percentage of Christians in Asia (second to the Philippines, of course), and even though the percentage is relatively small, it's still significant.  This post has pictures of churches in Korea.  I thought it was interesting to see how they combined Christianity with traditional Korean culture.  Very beautiful!

Top Ten Tuesday: Baby Love, it's gravy baby!  This is my new shopping list.  I love to hear what other moms think is a good buy.  I hate how magazines and catalogs tell you what you "should" buy.  Very irritating!

AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com. These are hilarious!  Definitely going in my Google Reader!

Friday Finds: A Link Round-up

On Being Normal, Suzie's Big Adventure. I love Suzie's description as a woman of living in Saudi Arabia.  I especially appreciated her thoughts on feeling "normal."  I felt that way--probably not to the same degree though--in Korea.  There were days I just wanted to feel normal!

Introducing Booksmart 2.0 & Our New 12x12 Large Square, Blurberati Blog.  I am SO EXCITED for this new release of Booksmart!  I haven't been able to use it yet (I'm in the process of installing it), but it sounds like the answer to all my requests for blurb books.  I published a book earlier this year through blurb and was entirely impressed!  I can't wait to use 2.0!!!

So, Just How Big is Africa?, Scarlett Lion: Liberia. I love geography, especially maps. Therefore, I love this post!

Cat Tales a Bath in Japan, Japan Probe.  These videos almost make me want to get a Sphynx cat.  But then they're just creepy looking.  But this one is so funny!

I tried to get airplane tickets from the Yang Yang airport. It didn't work. I don't understand why Korea has 14 airports when the country is approximately the size of Illinois! To get from the very northern area of South Korea, to the southern most is only about a 7 hour bus ride, and from the eastern area to the western area it's only about 3! No need for domestic airplanes!

12 Reasons Wives Refuse to Respect Husbands, The Lylah Blog.  I know I'm often guilty of not respecting my husband as much as I should.   I'm trying to do a lot better about it, and I think that my husband has been noticing.  And it's not as hard as I once thought it was.  And reading through this list, I found many reasons I used unconsciously.  And they're all debunked.  If this list is interesting to you, I also recommend reading the book, Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerichs.  It's an eye opener!

Dressing for Your Man, the Fascinating Woman.  Thought this was cute and I absolutely LOVE Gilmore Girls!

Chunky Book Tutorial, Memory Makers. I think I'll be making 3, or 4, or 10 of these!!!

This commercial cracked me up!

Swine Flu Wary Weiners?, Tokyo Times.  This was funny to me because I know how interesting things get in Korea (I assume things are similar in Japan?) when something big and scary happens.

From the Cute Farmer's Almanac, Cute Overload.  I love kittens.  End of story.

Friday Finds: A Link Round-up

This video is about a monkey who adopted a stuffed animal as it's surrogate mother. I didn't understand much of what it said, but I thought the monkey was cute carrying around a stuffed animal, and the schoolkids were cute with their yellow hats!

Wolfram|Alpha.   Found this on my friend Miriam's blog.  It's pretty entertaining.  You can type in almost anything and it will give you all kinds of info.  Check out the examples page.

And in other news, I put my pants on backwards this morning.  I blame the ease in doing so on maternity pants.  There are no buttons or zippers.  But you can still laugh at me if you want! :)

Friday Finds: A Link Round-up

Heart-Shaped Watermelons, Japan Probe.  Cute fruit!  But I don't think I'll be spending $160 on it.  But it doesn't surprise me that much.  We saw a very normal looking cantelope with a pretty ribbon around its middle and floral tape wrapping its stem in Korea for $37.

Wow, lame week.  I really did find interesting things this week, but I guess I didn't get them on the post today...

Friday Finds: A Link Round-up

Babette Blanket, The Purl Bee.  Maybe with my recent success with crocheting a baby blanket, I'm gaining a little too much confidence in my "skills."  Nevertheless, this will be a project in my future!  I hope that Sister Nelson can help me again! :)

Maidswap, American Bedu.  I love to learn about differences in culture!  Especially when something that would be normal or acceptable in one culture is so opposite in another that just the idea is preposterously funny.

Kasou Taisho (Costume Grand Prix) Videos, Japan Probe.  These are so funny! Wouldn't they be great at a ward party or talent show?

Friday Finds: A Link Round-up

Eskimo Olympics, Scribbit.  Someday, I'd like to see these in real life!  They seem sort of like the highland games, nobody really gets them except the people doing them, but interesting none the less!  I think I'll get Derek to try to do some of these things.  He's always looking for new ways to exercise...

Little Learners Preschool, The Hamilton Family.  My friend Hannah does an excellent preschool out of her home.  She's got a summer camp planned and is also enrolling for next year.  If you're in the area and have preschool age kids, she's the best!

Our Latest Gaming Obsession: Quatro, Scribbit.  Two Scribbit posts in a week!  She's on a roll!  This Quatro game is definitely something I'm putting on Derek's honey do list!

Chocolate-Covered Strawberries, flipflops and applesauce.  Mmm!  That is all I have to say!

As Written, Overstuffed.  I love this analogy!   If it's alright with Lara, I'll probably be using it in a talk, lesson, FHE, or choir practice!
